Summer time in Russia is always perceived as a holiday and travel season. Warm weather, sunny days, warming the greenery of the surrounding flora, all these factors together create a wonderful atmosphere for traveling and learning new things.
For Andrey Volkov, the head of the military-patriotic club Cascade from St. Petersburg, a reserve officer, combat participant, self-defense and special training instructor who completed a course on the Golden Triangle Melee Combat System, this is an opportunity to organize active recreation for young people and develop applied skills that will help them in later life..
This year, the head of the club decided to launch a new outdoor recreation program for young people, based on the innovative author’s melee System “Golden Triangle”. This program offers mastery of the basics of rational (expedient and economical) movement techniques that contribute to enriching the motor experience of those involved in martial arts, shooting training and knife throwing. Ultimately, this contributes to the acquisition of knowledge and the formation of skills and abilities that have an impact on improving the ability to counter threats emerging in the modern world.
Also, taking into account the interest of young people in new forms of physical activity, it is planned to organize and conduct physical education and sports events for a new type of competitive activity based on the NWT, practical athletic all—around.
All—around is the performance of specially designed sets of exercises for time, accuracy, and consistency, consisting of cyclic exercises, shooting, throwing objects, self-defense techniques, and tactical medicine (first aid). In order to ensure the possibility of organizing and conducting physical education and sports events with students in the CLOSE COMBAT fitness studios, a draft of the rules for conducting all-around competitions has been developed.
The development of sets of exercises included in the competition program is based on the principle of versatility, practicality (applied type), which makes it possible to competitively use all body functions, including those necessary for everyday life and the versatile preparation of citizens of pre-conscription and military age for military service and work in law enforcement agencies.
The first shift of students took place from June 15 to 27, under the guidance of instructors of the Golden Triangle Melee Combat System Andrey Volkov and Grant Ovsenyan.
Grant Ovsenyan, certified instructor of the Golden Triangle Melee System, holder of the 7th dan in combat jujitsu, instructor in army tactical shooting all-around and Burmese boxing, representative of the Voronezh “Close Combat Studio”, a third-generation professional athlete.
“Martial arts doesn’t end on the tatami”
As part of the training camp, the students underwent intensive training and got acquainted with the basic platform of the Golden Triangle System, which combines various types of competitive activities and sports with a military-applied focus, including traditional martial arts, martial arts and melee tactics, working with all types of small arms and cold weapons, as well as tactical medicine. (first aid). The main goal of NWT is to develop students’ reflex skills for effective actions in the complex use of various types of small arms and cold weapons, special equipment, self-defense techniques and first aid. The all-around and NWT training sessions focus on 3-plane movement. The three-plane training system is one of the most effective methods of preparing for work both in everyday life and in extreme conditions. Only by moving in 3D is it possible to preserve the functionality of all muscles and ligaments, spine, and joints for a long time.
The main directions of the Golden Triangle system:
-
Tactical training
Studying and practicing actions as part of small groups, orientation, tactical movement, interaction in urban and wooded areas.
-
Hand-to-hand combat and defense
Elements of applied hand-to-hand combat with a focus on real situations: disarming, controlling the enemy, protecting against knives and other threats.

Andrei Volkov and Grant Ovsenyan did not just transfer knowledge – they immersed the cadets in real scenarios that were as close as possible to the possible conditions of a real combat or emergency situation. Thanks to their high level of professionalism, discipline and clear approach, the participants felt like they were part of a real team capable of operating in any environment.
At the end of the training camp, the participants passed intermediate testing and final exams. All of them successfully completed their tasks and received certificates confirming the development of practical skills and theoretical foundations.
The training camps were held in an atmosphere of high motivation, discipline and a desire for growth. The students gained not only valuable knowledge and practical skills, but also a unique experience of interacting with professionals in their field.
